‘Silencing Dissent?’—Edo Group Accuses Okpebholo of Threats, APC Denies Allegation
BENIN – A group known as Concerned Edo Youths has condemned Governor Monday Okpebholo over an alleged threat directed at UK-based social media activist, Albert Obazee.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
At a press conference held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, the Concerned Edo Youths strongly condemned what they described as a troubling and unacceptable statement allegedly made by Governor Monday Okpebholo against UK-based social media activist, Albert Obazee.
Their outrage was sparked by a viral video in which Governor Okpebholo, during an online interview, is heard saying: “Obazee will definitely go to prison except he doesn’t touch the soil of Nigeria.”
Speaking on behalf of the group, Convener Comrade Gbale Joseph said the governor’s threat to jail Obazee without specifying any offence amounts to a blatant violation of human rights and a departure from democratic norms.
He stressed that the 1999 Constitution guarantees all Nigerians the right to freedom of expression, thought, association, and life, noting that these rights extend to Obazee regardless of his views or location.
The group further accused the Edo State government of attempting to suppress critical voices by leveraging state power to serve narrow political interests—an act they say contradicts both Nigeria’s democratic values and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” Joseph stated, “the Constitution is the supreme law guiding governance worldwide. The 1999 Constitution (as amended) clearly protects Albert Obazee’s fundamental rights.”
In response, the All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the allegations, calling them baseless and part of what it described as the PDP’s continued strategy of spreading misinformation and creating political distractions.
