Akpabio’s Verbal Attack on PDP, Coalition Draws Fierce Condemnation Nationwide

Published

A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has sharply criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio for referring to the PDP as a “defunct party.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

George reminded Akpabio that it was the PDP that launched and sustained his political career, describing the Senate President’s remarks as both ungrateful and disrespectful.

Akpabio had, on Saturday, during the APC South-South stakeholders’ meeting in Benin City, Edo State, ridiculed the PDP and dismissed the growing opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claiming both posed no threat to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I saw my brother, the former governor Okowa, and even though he was the vice presidential candidate of the defunct PDP, he has now seen the light,” Akpabio declared.
“I don’t care what name they want to call their party — Adamu United, Adama, Ada-Obi, or even ADC, our former airline. The South-South has spoken. We stand united behind Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the APC.”

In his reaction, Bode George, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, said Akpabio’s attack on the PDP betrayed the very foundation that made him a political figure.

“I wish him well, but he should not forget who made him,” George stated. “He’s now using his left hand to point at his father’s house. Who gave him the platform to become governor? It was the PDP. That same party gave him total support. He should reflect before uttering such words.”

George also said the history of Nigeria’s democracy would not overlook the pivotal role PDP played in the careers of many, including Akpabio and former Delta governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

“You think Nigerians don’t understand why Okowa is lying low? Go back and listen to what Oshiomhole said,” he added, hinting at undisclosed political undercurrents.

It is worth noting that Akpabio served two terms as governor under the PDP, was once the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, and became a Senator in 2015 through the PDP. He defected to the APC in 2018 after resigning as Senate Minority Leader.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, also took issue with Akpabio’s remarks, saying his mockery reflected the APC’s anxiety.

“What else can they do apart from mocking? We’re focused on the bigger picture. When we started this coalition, they dismissed it as dead on arrival. But now they’re clearly nervous — that’s why they’re lashing out,” Abdullahi said.

He added that the coalition remained resolute in its mission to unseat the APC in the 2027 polls.
