A Nigerian man, Kehinde Oluwagbemileke, has been captured by Ukrainian forces while fighting for the Russian military in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Oluwagbemileke, 29, was apprehended by the Freedom of Russia Legion, a unit made up of Russian nationals who support Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian initiative “I Want to Live.”

He was captured in the Zaporizhzhia region after serving for five months with the Russian army. Before his conscription, Kehinde had lived in Russia for four years, where he was arrested on drug-related charges under Article 228 of the Russian Criminal Code. Rather than serve a prison sentence, he reportedly agreed to join Russia’s military in exchange for a reduced term.

“Kehinde is one of thousands of mercenaries recruited by the Russian Defence Ministry from third-world countries,” the Ukrainian project said. “We’ve documented nearly 7,000 foreign fighters from 14 nations, but that’s just a fraction of the expendable manpower the Kremlin is throwing into Ukraine.”

Just a week prior, Ukrainian forces captured another foreign fighter — a 24-year-old Chinese national, Wang Wu, who had also joined the Russian ranks.

Using AI, The Guardian transcribed a video released by the Freedom of Russia Legion, which included a brief interrogation of Kehinde:

Interviewer: Our stormtroopers returned from a mission with an unusual catch — Kehinde Oluwagbemileke. Putin’s forces are now luring foreigners, using deception, to fight in Ukraine.

Interrogator: What passport do you hold?
Kehinde: Russian.
Interrogator: You joined the SVO (Special Military Operation)?
Kehinde: Yes.
Interrogator: Why?
Kehinde: For quick liberation.
Interrogator: Were you in prison?
Kehinde: Yes, but they released me.
Interrogator: How long have you been in the army?
Kehinde: Five months.
Interrogator: Any family?
Kehinde: No.
Interrogator: Do they know where you are?
Kehinde: No.
Interrogator: Do you regret joining?
Kehinde: Of course. It’s… broken. (points to injuries)
Interrogator: How many from your unit survived?
Kehinde: We were four. One died (200), the rest wounded (300).

He also revealed that prior to his military service, he worked as a translator in Russia, helping non-Russian-speaking Africans, South Americans, and Chinese nationals.

A medic tending to Kehinde’s wounds injected him with antibiotics, assuring him: “This is so your wounds don’t fester.” Visibly moved, Kehinde expressed gratitude:

“Thank you. I am very grateful to the Freedom of Russia Legion for saving my life and providing assistance, as you can see. Thank you again.”

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”
