Shockwave in Political Circles as Atiku Pledges Youth, Female Takeover of Government
Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to significantly increase the inclusion of youths and women in his administration if elected president in 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
“We will ensure that 70 per cent of our appointments go to youths and women,” Atiku Abubakar declared in a viral video circulating on social media Saturday.
The former Vice President and perennial presidential contender also vowed to launch an aggressive anti-corruption campaign if elected in 2027, saying Nigeria’s backwardness is the result of entrenched graft.
“I swear to God, if elected, anyone caught stealing or engaging in corruption will face the full wrath of the law,” Abubakar asserted. “Other countries are progressing, but Nigeria remains stagnant because of a handful of corrupt individuals.”
His comments come shortly after opposition leaders—including former governors Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi—formed a new coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election. Both Obi and Amaechi have pledged to serve only one term if elected.
Abubakar’s renewed anti-corruption stance has reignited scrutiny over his past. He was previously heard in a leaked audio tape admitting to helping set up offshore shell companies to secure lucrative federal contracts. He was also linked to a controversial broadband contract scandal during the Obasanjo administration—one that ultimately led to the conviction of U.S. Congressman William Jefferson. Though American investigators tied Jefferson’s bribes to Nigerian deals, Abubakar was never formally charged.
Despite his checkered past, Atiku remains a fixture in Nigerian politics. He has sought the presidency six times over three decades: first on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1993; then on the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) ticket in 2007, where he lost to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of the PDP.
In 2011, he lost the PDP primary to then-President Goodluck Jonathan. After a stint in the APC where he lost the 2015 primaries to Muhammadu Buhari, he returned to the PDP and lost the 2019 and 2023 general elections to Buhari and Tinubu, respectively.
