Former Army Chief Advocates Mandatory Military Training for Nigerians, Beginning with NYSC
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), has proposed the introduction of compulsory military training for all Nigerians, starting with members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He said this would help foster national unity, discipline, and resilience in the face of mounting security and societal challenges.
Ihejirika made the call on Friday night during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 18 Alumni Association, held in Abuja.
Reflecting on his formative years in the military, Ihejirika highlighted the enduring bonds forged among officers and how the values of discipline and patriotism shaped their careers and contributions to nation-building.
“Considering the current state of affairs in our country, I believe it is time to consider mandatory military training for all citizens. The NYSC scheme can serve as a starting point,” he said. “This approach will nurture a generation that understands sacrifice, duty, and national loyalty.”
Ihejirika also commended the Federal Government’s decision to restore the old national anthem, describing it as a step that reinforces the message of unity. He particularly cited the line, “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand,” as a powerful reflection of national identity and collective purpose.
However, he lamented that the anthem has lost its symbolic weight in public life. “It should not be treated as mere protocol at official events. It ought to be a daily reminder of our collective commitment, and must be reintroduced in schools, communities, and national functions.”
Recounting his humble roots in Abia State, Ihejirika shared how military discipline transformed his life, crediting his success to mentorship and the support of colleagues. His journey culminated in his appointment as Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Army Staff.
The retired general also lauded the current leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, noting that many of them earned their ranks through combat experience in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other conflict zones. “They are seasoned professionals and are performing admirably,” he said.
He concluded by urging national leaders to put unity and peace at the forefront of governance, stressing that no position or institution can thrive in the absence of national cohesion.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event was attended by the Minister of State for Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs’ representatives, and other dignitaries.
