After Flames, Fortune: Federal Government to Spend ₦17bn Rebuilding Lagos Bridge
The Federal Government has successfully negotiated the cost of rehabilitating the fire-damaged Iddo Bridge in Lagos, bringing it down from an initial ₦27 billion to ₦17 billion.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Friday during an inspection visit to the site, where he praised the contractors, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, for their cooperation under a new management team.
“Julius Berger initially quoted about ₦27 billion, but after extensive negotiations and discussions, we agreed on ₦17 billion,” Umahi told journalists.
He hailed the firm as a “born-again Berger” and attributed the more favourable deal to the transparency and commitment of the company’s new leadership.
Reaffirming the Tinubu administration’s commitment to cost-effective governance, Umahi said contractors must now strictly comply with the standards and expectations of the Ministry of Works.
He further explained that the scope of the project had expanded from a limited rehabilitation of the burnt portion to a comprehensive overhaul of the entire affected section.
The minister expressed dismay over the bridge’s deteriorated condition, which he blamed on years of neglect and misuse—particularly the illegal occupation beneath the bridge and repeated impacts from heavy-duty trucks.
“Three spans of the bridge were severely damaged by fire caused by illegal occupants. They had moved in with chemicals, built block structures, and set up open flames that eventually engulfed the bridge,” Umahi said.
He noted that the bridge currently has a dangerously low headroom of about 4.5 metres and announced plans to raise it to at least 5.6 metres to prevent further damage from tall vehicles.
Umahi also made it clear that no displaced persons or squatters would be allowed to return under the bridge.
“As long as I remain Minister of Works, nobody will live under Iddo Bridge again. The lives of Nigerians are more important,” he declared, stressing that national infrastructure would no longer be left at the mercy of abusers.
