A 53-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested at Malta International Airport after customs and police officials, acting on intelligence, intercepted him upon arrival from Brussels earlier this week.

According to a police statement, he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where a medical scan revealed he had ingested approximately 100 capsules containing a substance suspected to be high-purity cocaine. The capsules, with an estimated street value of €300,000, were extracted under medical supervision.

Preliminary tests indicate the substance is likely high-grade cocaine, though further laboratory analysis is underway to determine its exact composition and quantity.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be formally charged in court in the coming days.

Authorities say the arrest is yet another significant breakthrough in Malta’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking. They reiterated warnings that Malta’s strategic Mediterranean location makes it a frequent target for smuggling attempts—especially through “internal concealment,” a high-risk method that poses serious health dangers to couriers.
