Published

The Kano State Government has temporarily banned the importation of scrap and waste materials from Northeastern states, particularly those affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The directive was announced in a statement issued by Muhammad Dahir Idris, Director of Public Relations and Enlightenment at the Ministry.

According to the statement, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, AVM Ibrahim Umaru (Rtd), issued the directive on Wednesday during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Scraps and Waste Dealers, Employers of Nigeria.

Umaru explained that the decision followed the recent bomb explosion at a scrap warehouse along Western Bypass Road and Kofar Ruwa, which resulted in fatalities and destruction of property. He urged the association to develop safety measures to prevent future occurrences and to ensure that all scrap materials brought into the state are free of explosives.

“Kano State remains committed to protecting your interests and supporting your business. You are encouraged to draft a formal policy and growth plan to enhance your operations,” Umaru advised.

Responding, the association’s Regional President, Aminu Hassan, said members had already stopped purchasing scrap and waste materials from insurgency-affected states in the Northeast. He assured the commissioner that the association would continue to operate within the law and requested government support to help grow their businesses.

Hassan explained that the association, registered under the 2004 Trade Union Act and overseen by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, supplies scrap materials essential for the operations of several industries that cannot afford new raw materials. He warned that halting their operations could severely affect many manufacturing companies.

He added that the association has created employment for thousands of youth, with over 100,000 members spread across all 44 local government areas in the state.

Addressing some of the group’s challenges, Hassan noted the increasing number of underage children acting as scavengers. He disassociated the association from this practice, blaming it instead on irresponsible parenting.

He acknowledged that a few unscrupulous individuals within the sector engage in vandalism and trading stolen goods. However, he noted that the association has consistently collaborated with security agencies to arrest and prosecute offenders.

Also speaking, a member of the association’s Board of Trustees and chairman of the National Association of Kano (NAK), Akilu Hassan Sardaunan Funtua, emphasized the need for stronger collaboration with the state government to foster economic growth and stability.

In conclusion, Hassan assured the commissioner that the association would continue to enforce strict safety standards to prevent any recurrence of such tragic incidents.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
