Army to Agencies: We’re Watching How You Prosecute Security Breaches
The Nigerian military on Thursday dismissed claims that it hands over arrested criminals and turns a blind eye, asserting that it actively monitors the progress of prosecutions to ensure justice is properly served.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
While providing updates on military operations across various theatres in Abuja on Thursday, the Nigerian military reaffirmed that it does not possess prosecutorial authority.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, disclosed during a press briefing that troops engaged in internal security operations had arrested at least 1,191 terrorists, including key leaders, during the second quarter of 2025.
He further noted that over 680 terrorists and their families surrendered to security forces within the same period, while 543 kidnapped victims were rescued across multiple operational zones.
Addressing a question about the fate of arrested suspects after they are handed over, Kangye clarified:
“As you rightly mentioned, we don’t have the mandate to prosecute. Once arrests are made, the suspects are transferred to the relevant government agencies authorized to prosecute. However, that doesn’t mean we completely disengage after handing them over.
“We continue to track the progress of these prosecutions to ensure that justice is being pursued. But decisions on sentencing or punishment are entirely outside our jurisdiction.”
He emphasized that the military’s role is to execute operations, and when arrests occur, it promptly transfers suspects to agencies like the police and prosecuting authorities for legal action.
General Kangye also stressed that troops are conducting their duties professionally, in strict compliance with the code of conduct, rules of engagement, and international laws of armed conflict.
