Yobe on Lockdown! Govt, Military Halt Weekly Markets Over Rising Terror Threats
Approximately eight weekly markets in Yobe East Senatorial District have been reportedly closed due to a resurgence of attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in various parts of the region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Findings by Channels Television indicated that commercial activities were suspended last week in several weekly markets across Yobe East Senatorial District due to renewed Boko Haram attacks. Markets affected include Bumsa in Gulani LGA, and Goniri, Gujba, and Katarko in Gujba LGA. Also, no trading occurred at Katarko Thursday Market and Kukareta Tuesday Market in Damaturu LGA, as well as the popular Geidam Wednesday Market in Geidam LGA.
However, the Yobe State Government, through a statement by Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd), Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, clarified that only three markets—Katarko, Kukareta, and Buni Yadi—were officially closed.
“This is to inform the general public that Katarko, Kukareta, and Buni Yadi weekly markets have been temporarily closed for operational reasons,” the statement noted.
According to the government, the move aims to facilitate proactive engagements and reinforce gains made in ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the state.
“The temporary measure became necessary to achieve specific security objectives and enhance safety in the affected communities and the state at large,” Abdulsalam added.
He appealed for public understanding and cooperation, assuring that every effort is being made to expedite the operations and ease the inconvenience caused by the market closures.
The shutdown follows a recent attack involving an improvised explosive device (IED) planted along the Katarko–Goniri road, which claimed four lives and left 21 others injured.
