Speaking during the event held on Wednesday in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, the Director of the Centre, Prof. Zara Kwaghe, explained that the webinar, titled “Revisiting Our Past: Bridging Indigenous Wisdom and Modern Medicine for a Healthier Future,” was designed to underscore the value of indigenous knowledge in improving healthcare delivery.
Prof. Kwaghe stressed the importance of building synergy between traditional and modern medical practices, rather than positioning them in opposition.
“Our objective is to envision a healthcare system that is inclusive, sustainable, culturally rooted, and scientifically valid,” she said.
She reaffirmed the university’s commitment to community engagement and collaboration with traditional healers, adding that the Centre plays a vital role in harnessing local knowledge as part of its social responsibility mandate.
Experts at the webinar unanimously called for greater collaboration between practitioners of traditional and modern medicine to improve healthcare outcomes across Nigeria.
Presenting a paper titled “Revisiting Bioactive Plants in Traditional Healing: A Microbiological Appraisal,” Prof. Aleruchi Chuku, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at FULafia, advocated for rigorous scientific validation of traditional medicine practices.
“There is a pressing need to document and clinically prove the efficacy of what traditional healers have practiced for generations, so that herbal remedies can be standardised and dosed appropriately for both adults and children,” she said.
Prof. Chuku proposed the creation of a national herbal database, a clear framework for dosage and preparation, and guidelines for safe usage and hygiene in herbal medicine practices. She further urged all levels of government to fund clinical trials of potent medicinal plants to improve public health.
Also speaking, Prof. Ali Shugaba, Provost of the College of Medicine at FULafia, noted that traditional medicine can serve as a complementary option to modern healthcare, especially in preventive care, mental health, and chronic disease management.
He urged the federal government to work towards formally integrating traditional medicine into the national health system.
Prof. Victor Dugga, Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, stressed the need to document and digitise African indigenous medical knowledge, lamenting that much of traditional African medicine remains undocumented and at risk of being lost.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Shehu Abdul-Rahman—represented by Prof. Muhammad Kida, Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences—emphasised the value of multi-stakeholder collaboration in advancing research and development in indigenous knowledge systems for national progress.
