Anambra Decides: INEC Kicks Off Voter Registration Drive Ahead of Crucial 2025 Poll
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State has announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will commence on July 8, in preparation for the November 8, 2025 governorship election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The announcement was made by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, during a press briefing held Thursday at the INEC office in Awka.
Dr. Agwu emphasized that the CVR is specifically for the governorship election and will not cover the upcoming bye-elections for the Senate and House of Assembly.
Outlining the commission’s scheduled activities, she stated that the CVR will run daily from July 8 to July 17, excluding Mondays, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. each day.
“We urge eligible residents of Anambra to seize this opportunity to register or update their voter information,” Agwu said. “Fresh registration must be done physically at designated INEC centres. However, data updates and corrections can be made online.”
She stressed that INEC will not process registrations after the 3:00 p.m. deadline, as the portal automatically shuts down at that hour.
As part of preparations, training for ad hoc electoral staff will take place over the weekend, and INEC has finalized arrangements with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for the deployment of corps members as ad hoc workers during the election.
The REC warned the public against paying anyone for registration or attempting to register by proxy, reiterating that such actions are illegal.
“INEC is not charging for registration. Do not pay anyone, and do not attempt to register for someone else,” she cautioned.
Dr. Agwu further revealed that 300 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines have been configured for the November election and verified for functionality. She also confirmed that all non-sensitive materials have been delivered, while sensitive materials are expected to arrive soon.
On the scheduled August 16 bye-election, Agwu clarified that only existing Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be valid for voting and that the CVR starting July 8 does not apply to the bye-election.
She also disclosed that a new nationwide CVR will begin immediately after the bye-election to prepare for the 2027 general elections.
So far, 16 political parties have fielded candidates for the upcoming governorship race. INEC, she noted, has serviced its vehicles and signed agreements with recognized transport unions to ensure smooth logistics during the polls.
“We’ve already held sensitization meetings with stakeholders. INEC is committed to conducting a better election than the last. Our systems, including BVAS, have been thoroughly checked,” she assured.
Finally, she explained that the early announcement of the election date complies with the legal requirement of issuing notice 360 days before polling day.
