2027 Fallout Begins: PDP Clarifies It’s Not Backing Atiku-Mark Coalition Plot

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that it has not endorsed or made any official decision regarding the newly formed coalition movement seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the PDP is currently focused on preparations for its upcoming National Convention and internal consolidation efforts.

The party has been navigating internal conflicts since the 2023 general election, with tensions escalating in 2024 over the position of National Secretary. That dispute was resolved in favour of Senator Samuel Anyanwu during the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday.

Despite this resolution, the PDP has witnessed a wave of defections, with several members pledging support for a newly unveiled opposition coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Notably, PDP governors who met in Ibadan on April 15, 2024, had clearly declared that the party would not participate in any coalition seeking to challenge the current administration in 2027.

Reaffirming this stance, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, emphasized that while the party welcomes new members and returnees, it has no intention of joining any coalition.

This official party line, however, appears to diverge from the recent actions of some prominent PDP leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark (now ADC interim chairman), and ex-Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido. These figures have actively supported the ADC-led alliance and, through a communiqué signed by Mark at a strategy meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, called on PDP members and Nigerians to back the coalition.

While some of these individuals have already defected from the PDP, others are engaging with the coalition while still retaining their PDP membership.

In reaction to these developments, Acting Chairman Damagum warned that disciplinary measures would be taken against any member working to destabilize the party.

Ologunagba added, “The attention of the National Working Committee has been drawn to misleading reports on social media suggesting that the PDP has directed its members to join the coalition movement. This is categorically false.”

“For the record, the PDP has not adopted any official position on the coalition. Our current priority is to strengthen unity, stability, and capacity within the party as we work to reposition ourselves as the leading opposition platform ready to reclaim power in 2027.”

He further stated that the party is making steady progress toward organizing a successful National Convention aimed at revitalizing the PDP ahead of the next general election.

“Nonetheless, as Nigeria’s leading opposition party with deep-rooted national structures and widespread public support, the PDP remains open to engaging with other credible, like-minded individuals in efforts to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the ineffective and unresponsive APC-led government,” Ologunagba concluded.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
