Niger in Crisis: Natural Disasters Kill 500+ in Eight Months, Emergency Agency Reveals
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has disclosed that over 500 lives were lost to various disasters in the state between September 2024 and May 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
NSEMA’s Director General, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, revealed this on Wednesday during a press briefing on the agency’s emergency response efforts. The fatalities, he noted, resulted from multiple incidents including tanker explosions, road accidents, dynamite blasts, and flooding.
Baba-Arah emphasized that NSEMA remains committed to protecting lives and property through prompt and coordinated interventions. He extended condolences to affected families and highlighted several recent tragedies:
-
In September 2024, a tanker explosion in Agaie LGA claimed 60 lives and injured 8 others. NSEMA, in conjunction with first responders, led the rescue operations and conducted a needs assessment to guide relief efforts.
-
On January 18, 2025, another tanker explosion in Diko resulted in over 80 fatalities. Emergency teams were deployed immediately in collaboration with health and security services to manage the crisis and support victims’ families.
-
NSEMA also responded to the Sabon Pegi dynamite explosion, which caused multiple casualties and destroyed several homes. Relief efforts included the provision of food, cash, and shelter materials by the state government.
-
Most recently, massive flooding in Mokwa displaced thousands. NSEMA coordinated with local authorities and humanitarian partners to deliver emergency supplies and temporary shelters to victims.
The agency further warned of a growing humanitarian crisis in parts of Mariga and Rijau LGAs due to renewed bandit attacks. Baba-Arah confirmed that armed groups had ambushed soldiers and attacked a military base, resulting in casualties on both sides.
In response to the rising challenges, NSEMA is working to stockpile emergency relief materials at strategic locations to enhance rapid deployment during future crises.
Baba-Arah also commended Governor Mohammed Bago, traditional rulers, community leaders, volunteers, and partners for their continued collaboration in building a safer and more resilient Niger State.
