‘Lives Are Being Lost Daily!’ Transport Unions Demand Urgent Action on Ilorin–Jebba Highway”

Hundreds of transporters under the banners of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Kwara State, alongside concerned residents, staged a protest on Wednesday over the removal of speed breakers along the Oko-Olowo Expressway in Ilorin.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The demonstrators decried the action taken by the contractor handling rehabilitation works on the road for the Federal Government, lamenting that the dismantling of the speed breakers has turned the highway into a deadly zone once again. They recalled that the installation of the speed breakers by the state government had drastically reduced accidents and saved lives, only for the recent roadwork to reverse those gains.

With placards bearing messages such as “Federal government should protect road users,” “Stop killing us in Oko-Olowo,” “Reinstall speed breakers now,” and “We say no to avoidable accidents,” the protesters demanded urgent intervention.

Leading the demonstration, RTEAN State Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Onikijipa, and his NURTW counterpart, Alhaji Abdulrasaq Ariwoola, called for the immediate reinstatement of the speed breakers, insisting that they would not stand idly by while their members and innocent commuters die due to government negligence.

Onikijipa explained that the Kwara State Government had originally installed the speed breakers following persistent advocacy by the unions, even though the road is under federal jurisdiction. He urged the Federal Government to not only reintroduce the safety structures immediately but also to ensure that future road projects include essential protective measures.

He further called for those responsible for the removal to be held accountable for their actions, especially as there was no consultation with road users or local stakeholders prior to the decision.

“The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and our allied unions are deeply disturbed by the arbitrary and dangerous removal of these life-saving devices by a federal contractor,” Onikijipa said. “These weren’t mere bumps—they were essential safety infrastructure. Removing them without cause or replacement is reckless. If urgent action is not taken, we will be forced to mobilise transport workers across the state and escalate our demands.”

Also speaking at the protest, NURTW Chairman, Ariwoola, echoed the call for immediate restoration of the speed breakers as a short-term solution, while recommending the construction of overhead and pedestrian bridges in Oko-Olowo to serve as a long-term fix to the persistent road safety challenges in the area.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
