The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to issue a supplementary document to its 2022 Regulations and Guidelines, aimed at clarifying procedures surrounding the review of election results, particularly under Section 65 of the Electoral Act.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this known on Tuesday, July 1, during the second quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Yakubu revealed that INEC is gearing up for five critical elections over the next 13 months and emphasized the need for clarity on result reviews and declarations.

“The Commission is finalizing a supplement to the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines to ensure transparency in the process of reviewing declarations and returns during elections,” he stated.

The upcoming elections include:

  • By-elections across 12 states on August 16, 2025

  • Anambra governorship election on November 8, 2025

  • FCT Area Council elections on February 21, 2026

  • Ekiti governorship election on June 20, 2026

  • Osun governorship election on August 8, 2026

The INEC boss noted that Section 65 of the Electoral Act—which allows the Commission to review results where infractions are established—has sparked considerable public debate, necessitating the forthcoming clarification.

“The supplementary guidelines will likely be released as early as this week and made available on our website and other public platforms,” he added.

RECs Urged to Stay Active Beyond General Elections

Prof. Yakubu reminded RECs that their duties are not seasonal and must be sustained year-round.

“You are full-time officials of the Commission; your responsibilities extend beyond general elections,” he emphasized. “Some of you are doing commendable work, but there is still room for improvement.”

He urged RECs to continuously train their staff on policy updates and innovations without waiting for directives from INEC headquarters.

“There are already approved policies and procedures you must enforce proactively,” Yakubu said.

He also announced that Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume nationwide on August 18 for online pre-registration and on August 25 for physical registration. However, Anambra State—scheduled to hold its governorship election in November—will begin its CVR next week across all 326 wards.

Tuesday’s meeting was also the first for four newly sworn-in RECs. INEC also formally welcomed two new National Commissioners, Professors Sunday Aja and Abdulrazak Yusuf.

Yakubu concluded by charging all RECs with a renewed sense of purpose and dedication:
“This is a collective responsibility. We must each play our role effectively to uphold the integrity of our elections,” he said.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
