During a press briefing held Wednesday at Army Headquarters, Abuja, to kick off the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), Oluyede emphasized that the military remains resolute in fulfilling its constitutional duty to defend the nation from both internal and external threats.
Speaking through the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Gold Chibuisi, the Army Chief said:
“In recent times, Nigeria has faced threats from enemies of peace and agents of disorder, including terrorism and widespread internal security breaches. Nevertheless, the Nigerian Army has risen to the challenge, denying these elements the space to undermine our national unity and sovereignty.”
He stressed that the Army continues to play a critical role in law enforcement, supporting civil institutions, and ensuring the protection of Nigerian lives and property.
“We remain committed to the security of our people and the sustainability of our democracy,” he said.
Oluyede further stated that the Army’s ongoing transformation agenda prioritizes the welfare and professional development of its personnel as a strategy to boost operational efficiency and enhance national service delivery.
“This year’s NADCEL theme reflects our renewed focus on putting soldiers first,” he noted. “As a symbol of national unity, the Nigerian Army has made significant progress in innovation, civil-military relations, research and development, and technology—all aimed at equipping our personnel to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities.”
He also paid tribute to the Army’s historical role in national service, referencing its involvement in the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, numerous peacekeeping missions, and ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
“As we commemorate 162 years of existence, we honour the dedication and sacrifices of our officers and soldiers—past and present. From the Glover Hausas of the colonial era to the professional force we have today, the Army has remained a stabilizing pillar of the Nigerian state.”
Oluyede outlined key activities lined up for NADCEL 2025, including civil-military projects across Kaduna State, free medical outreaches, charitable programmes, school engagement initiatives, and a lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy.
The week-long celebration will culminate on July 6 with a grand military parade and awards ceremony.
