Panic has gripped the Ogboji community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State following a deadly attack by gunmen who stormed a meeting venue and opened fire, killing at least 19 people, according to local sources.

Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the attackers, who arrived in two Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), targeted a gathering believed to be comprised of Ebonyi State indigenes. The motive behind the gruesome assault remains unclear, though speculation ranges from renewed enforcement of the outlawed sit-at-home directive to internal disputes among group members.

According to one survivor who spoke under anonymity for security reasons, “They came suddenly, asking for the minutes of the meeting. Before anyone could respond, they started shooting. It was terrifying.”

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack but put the official death toll at 10, with nine others receiving treatment for various injuries sustained during the onslaught.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement on Tuesday, “The armed criminals came in two SUVs and launched an unprovoked attack on a gathering, shooting sporadically. The victims were rushed to the hospital and, regrettably, 10 were confirmed dead. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.”

The attack has triggered widespread fear across Ogboji and surrounding communities, with residents calling on security agencies to intensify surveillance and restore a sense of safety in the region.

According to him, such a partnership could help bridge Nigeria’s regional and political divides, particularly between the North and South-East, while also boosting support across the southern region.

Mai-Lemo further stated that a collaboration between the two politicians, especially with backing from other regional leaders, could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.

He said: “I think we have to be very realistic… we have seen what alliances have done. At times it’s necessary to look at the reality on the ground to achieve your goals.
