Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed that nine additional individuals sustained injuries during the attack.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 1, Ikenga revealed that the assailants stormed the meeting venue on the evening of Monday, June 30, and opened fire on attendees.

While condemning the heinous attack, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, reaffirmed the force’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“The armed assailants, who arrived in two SUVs, stormed the venue and opened fire on the unsuspecting gathering without provocation,” Ikenga said.

He noted that the victims were immediately rushed to the hospital, where ten were confirmed dead, and their bodies deposited in the morgue. He added that a joint security team, led by the police, had since taken control of the scene and commenced investigations to track down those responsible.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the victims were members of a group of Ebonyi State indigenes holding a meeting when the gunmen struck. Some residents claim the actual death toll could be as high as 19, contradicting the police figure.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, locals speculated it could be linked to the recent resurgence of Monday sit-at-home enforcement or possibly an internal rift within the group. A resident also disclosed that the attackers demanded the meeting’s minutes before unleashing violence.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
