Former Kaduna State Governor, Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), has revealed that a significant majority—about 80 per cent—of military officers were in support of actualising the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by Chief MKO Abiola. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for conferring on him the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) but emphasised that many unsung heroes of the struggle remain unacknowledged.

In a statement, Umar noted:
“Although I was among the leaders of the military movement backing the June 12 mandate, my contribution was not greater than that of many others who have remained anonymous.”

Umar stressed that Chief Abiola’s sweeping support among the military—winning over 80 per cent of their votes—demonstrated the depth of internal support for democracy. He said it was time to publicly acknowledge others who risked their careers in the fight.

He listed several officers who played vital roles, including:

  • Col. M.A. Garba (his deputy at the Armoured Corps Centre)

  • Lt. Cols. Lawal Jaafaru Isa, UF Ahmed, MS Dasuki, ML Gwadabe, J. Temlong, Musa Shehu, Chris Eze, HM Dzarma, Isa Jibrin, JOS Oshanupin, A. Oloruntoba, Moke, Happy Bulus, Olagunsoye Oyinlola

  • Cols. J. Okai, E. Ndubueze

  • Lt. Cols. Yakubu Muazu, Yahaya Abubakar (Etsu Nupe)

  • Majors Saad Abubakar (Sultan of Sokoto), Abba Maimalari, Jamil Tahir, Buzugbe, LP Aprezi, MK Yake, J Dawah, Suleiman Wali, Dauda Komo, Lucky Torrie, JS Zaruwa, M Sumaye, Sani Bawa, Ndaliman, Ahmed, M. Bawa

  • Lt. Col. JB Ahmadu

  • Capts. Junaid Bindawa, Lar

Umar said:
“I humbly accept this national honour on behalf of these gallant officers. But the award will only be truly meaningful if the democracy we fought for delivers good governance.”

He then issued a warning to President Tinubu against political sycophancy, urging him to focus on the real task of governance:
“Mr. President must avoid the flattery of praise-singers who seek to distract him from his mandate. The growing trend of prematurely naming public institutions after sitting presidents or governors is part of the problem.”

Umar also criticised recent comments such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s claim that Tinubu would win 99.9% of the 2027 vote. “Even if meant humorously, Mr President should not entertain such empty flattery. The real work lies in delivering on the democratic promise to the Nigerian people,” he said.

He concluded by calling on all leaders to emulate the integrity of the military officers who supported June 12, saying they “operated above sycophancy and held their superiors accountable.” He called for a national culture of truth, accountability, and meaningful service over personal glorification.

They are expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, April 22, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Also listed in the charge, though reportedly at large, is former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva.

The case, filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, includes allegations of treason, terrorism, money laundering, and failure to disclose security-related information.

According to the charge, the defendants allegedly conspired in 2025 to destabilise the Nigerian state and undermine the authority of the President.

It was further alleged that they planned actions intended to “levy war against the state to overawe the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” an offence punishable under the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors also claimed the accused had prior knowledge of a planned treasonable act involving Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji and others but failed to report it to the authorities or take steps to prevent it.

Beyond the treason allegations, they are also being prosecuted under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, for allegedly supporting and participating in activities linked to terrorism.

Two of the defendants, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim and Zekeri Umoru, were specifically accused of attending meetings allegedly connected to terrorist planning and ideological mobilisation aimed at destabilising the country’s constitutional order.

The Federal Government further alleged that the accused provided indirect support for terrorist activities and failed to disclose critical intelligence that could have prevented the alleged offences.

In addition, several of the defendants are accused of handling funds believed to be linked to terrorism financing.

Bukar Kashim Goni was alleged to have retained ₦50 million suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, while Abdulkadir Sani was accused of holding ₦2 million from similar sources.

Zekeri Umoru was also accused of receiving and retaining ₦10 million and ₦8.8 million without passing through financial institutions, while Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim was alleged to have taken possession of ₦1 million connected to the case.

All financial allegations were filed under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Gbajabiamila made the remark during a birthday celebration organised in honour of Abejide, according to reports.

He noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was pleased with the lawmaker’s activities within the ADC, adding that his presence was creating internal tensions in the opposition party.

The Chief of Staff also urged Abejide to disregard calls from APC members, including former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who had reportedly encouraged him to defect to the ruling party.

“Don’t come to APC. Stay in ADC and scatter them. We like what you’re doing. Don’t mind former governor Yahaya Bello, who said you should join APC. No, no, no, stay in ADC and win your election. Also, bring Bala Gombe, and we’ll support him. Good luck in court,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, fresh tension has emerged within the African Democratic Congress as factional leader Nafiu Bala accused former national chairman Ralph Nwosu of misrepresenting the purpose of a recent party event.

Bala, speaking in an interview on AIT on Monday, said he was invited to what he believed was a routine meeting to welcome new members but later discovered it was used to announce a new leadership structure led by David Mark.

He explained that he only realised the full agenda after proceedings had begun, adding that the event also featured Nwosu stepping down while unveiling new party executives.

According to him, the development has deepened existing internal disputes within the party, especially with the appointment of David Mark and others into key leadership positions during the gathering.
