Tinubu’s Caribbean Sojourn Ignites Debate—Presidency Calls It a Strategic Homecoming
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has defended his trip to Saint Lucia, describing it as a strategic mission to reinforce diplomatic and ancestral bonds, while citing the historic contribution of a Saint Lucian medical doctor who served during the Nigerian civil war.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Sunday, defended President Bola Tinubu’s trip to Saint Lucia, describing it as a meaningful diplomatic engagement rather than a mere holiday. He dismissed criticisms of the visit as “mischievous and misguided.”
“From the standpoint of the Government of Saint Lucia, President Tinubu’s visit marks the rekindling of ancestral ties and the beginning of a renewed era of diplomatic, cultural, and economic cooperation between both nations,” the statement noted.
It further explained that, like many Caribbean countries, Saint Lucia has a large population of African descent. “In the mid-1800s, migrants from present-day Nigeria settled in Saint Lucia, bringing with them cultural and religious traditions that remain to this day,” Onanuga stated.
He highlighted the deep-rooted historical connections between Nigeria and the Caribbean, citing significant contributions by Saint Lucian nationals to Nigeria’s development.
Among them was Sir Darnley Alexander, a Saint Lucian-born jurist who served as Nigeria’s Chief Justice from 1975 to 1979. Onanuga also mentioned Neville Skeete, an architect from Saint Lucia involved in designing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s headquarters, and Michael Alexander, Sir Darnley’s son, who served as a frontline medical doctor with the Nigerian Army during the civil war.
The Presidency’s clarification came in response to criticism from Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who, on Saturday, condemned President Tinubu for travelling abroad amid worsening insecurity and growing hunger in the country.
