Foreign Economic Slavery! Jimoh Ibrahim Accuses IMF, World Bank of Stifling Nigeria’s Growth”

Ibrahim argued that contrary to reports by the two global financial institutions—which rank Nigeria among the world’s 12 poorest countries based on per capita income—the country is actually the 42nd largest economy globally.
In a statement shared with Sunday PUNCH, the senator questioned the credibility of the figures released by the IMF and World Bank, saying they failed to consider Nigeria’s full Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a critical factor in determining accurate per capita income.
“The IMF and World Bank usually present data from a narrow balance sheet perspective,” he said. “They overlook the wider economic context, including Nigeria’s total GDP, which currently stands at $363 billion.”
Ibrahim dismissed the per capita income figure of $808 cited by the institutions as “misleading,” insisting that Nigeria’s actual figure is around $1,597. He attributed the discrepancy to structural economic challenges that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is already working to resolve.
While acknowledging the country’s economic hardships, Ibrahim stressed that President Tinubu has never downplayed the severity of the situation. “Even the United States is grappling with serious economic issues, with its national debt at 127% of GDP,” he noted.
He further accused the IMF and World Bank of being overly focused on their consultancy businesses, suggesting they should pay more attention to their growing administrative expenses rather than issuing skewed reports about sovereign nations.
Ibrahim concluded by calling for increased investment in Nigeria’s knowledge economy, which he described as essential to driving sustainable growth and improving per capita income in the long term.
