In an interview on Talking Books African, a programme hosted by the Rainbow Book Club, Jonathan expressed concern over the country’s long history of flawed leadership choices, which he blamed on ethnic and religious biases.

He cautioned Nigerian youths against selecting leaders based on tribal or religious affiliations, urging them instead to prioritise competence and capability.

According to him, the entrenched influence of tribe and religion continues to undermine the country’s ability to recruit the right leaders.

“Nigeria is heavily divided along ethnic and religious lines, and it deeply troubles me,” Jonathan said. “Unless we make deliberate and difficult efforts to change course, this pattern may persist into future generations. We started off on the wrong foot, and we haven’t done much to correct it.”

He added, “This division is at the heart of most of our problems today. Young people must understand that tribalism and religious bias are major obstacles. They compromise leadership selection. A public officeholder, for instance, may overlook a more qualified candidate simply because someone from their tribe is available. That mindset holds us back.”
