The terminal operator disclosed the visit in a statement issued on Thursday and sent to The PUNCH.
According to the statement, the Queen was accompanied by the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jens Ole Bach Hansen, and was warmly welcomed by APMT Nigeria CEO, Frederik Klinke, and Terminal Manager, Steen Knudsen, among other company executives.
“Queen Mary, widely recognised for her strong advocacy for gender equality, the rights of women and girls, and her dedication to sustainable development and environmental causes, began her tour by meeting with the terminal’s female equipment operators,” the statement noted.
During the visit, Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen emphasised APMT Apapa’s commitment to promoting gender diversity by encouraging women to take on roles typically dominated by men.
“Education and initiatives that foster workforce diversity and create more opportunities for women are a key focus in our day-to-day operations across both of our terminals in Nigeria. We discussed our specialised recruitment programmes for female truck drivers and mechanics, as well as our leadership training and international career opportunities for local staff,” Knudsen said.
He further noted that Nigeria remains a key market for APM Terminals, which operates in both Onne and Apapa, and expressed the company’s desire to increase investment in infrastructure that supports sustainable development, job creation, and enhanced connectivity to global markets.
