Tensions Soar: Lagos APC Faces LG Poll Pressure as Ex-Generals Slam Security Collapse Over Soldiers’ Slaughter
At least 17 Nigerian soldiers have been killed and 10 others injured during coordinated attacks by armed bandits on military bases and surrounding communities in parts of Niger and Kaduna states.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The attacks, which targeted forward operating bases in Kwanar Dutse, Mairiga, and Boka in Niger State, as well as Angwan Turai in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, also left several bandits dead during fierce confrontations with troops.
Since the beginning of the year, insurgents have launched repeated assaults on fortified military outposts, with dozens of personnel killed or injured. Notably, bases in Rann, Gajiram, and Dikwa, Borno State, came under fire on May 13, resulting in the deaths of at least four soldiers. A day earlier, a military formation in Marte also suffered a deadly hit, with some personnel reportedly missing.
In response to the recent onslaughts, the Nigerian Army, in coordination with the Air Force, carried out several counter-operations. Confirming the developments on its official X handle on Wednesday, the Army stated that troops engaged the attackers in intense firefights, inflicting heavy casualties on the bandits.
“On June 24, 2025, bandits launched coordinated attacks on forward operating bases in Kwanar Dutse, Mairiga, Boka (Niger State), and Angwan Turai (Kaduna State). Land and air troops responded swiftly, eliminating several of the assailants,” the Army said. “Tragically, some of our brave soldiers lost their lives in the prolonged gun battles, while four others wounded are receiving medical care.”
Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, provided further details on the attacks, revealing that intelligence reports had alerted troops to the movement of nearly 300 armed terrorists through the Kwanar Dutse forest towards Kwatankoro, possibly to evade operations in Zamfara or launch attacks on nearby settlements.
She said troops intercepted the group and engaged them in a three-hour battle. “Following this, the Nigerian Air Force delivered precision strikes along the terrorists’ escape routes, targeting their hideouts. While the exact number of casualties is unclear, the presence of blood trails suggests significant enemy losses. Operations are ongoing to verify the extent of the damage.”
Anele confirmed that 17 soldiers died in the confrontation, with 10 others sustaining various injuries. “The wounded personnel are currently receiving treatment at a military hospital and are reported to be in stable condition,” she said.
Meanwhile, Niger State’s Commissioner for Homeland Security, Mohammed Bello, also confirmed the attacks, stating that he was unable to provide casualty figures, noting that the relevant security agencies would issue official figures.
“I was scheduled to be in Mokwa today (Wednesday) for the continuation of the check distribution, but I had to return due to these developments,” Bello said.
Calls for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security framework have grown louder, with former military generals warning that the continued attacks on military installations highlight critical gaps in intelligence and response coordination.
