Security Heat Intensifies: Dozens Held Over North Central Slaughters to Be Prosecuted
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, announced the arrest of 53 suspects linked to the recent spate of deadly attacks in Benue and Plateau states.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The attacks, which resulted in dozens of fatalities and left many injured and displaced, have triggered a swift response from security agencies.
Egbetokun, while briefing journalists in Abuja, described the June 13 massacre in Yelwata, Benue State, as a “coordinated act of terror.” He said 26 suspects have been apprehended in connection with the attack. Additionally, 22 suspects were arrested over a separate incident in Plateau, while five more were picked up in Benue over a recent assault in Makurdi.
He confirmed that 47 people were killed and 27 others injured in the Yelwata massacre. Security forces recovered two general-purpose machine guns and eight AK-47 rifles used in the attack.
“On June 13, 2025, between 11:30 p.m. and 11:40 p.m., armed militias stormed the Eluwata community in the Manuka Province of Benue State, indiscriminately killing residents and razing properties. It was a calculated terror attack that displaced hundreds,” the IGP said.
He noted that tactical units and special forces were immediately deployed to restore security in the affected and neighboring communities.
Egbetokun explained that operatives from the police intelligence response team launched a targeted manhunt, leading to the arrest of two prime suspects on June 19. These suspects then aided in capturing seven more the following day. On June 21, another key figure—who hosted the planning meeting—was arrested, and 18 additional suspects were picked up on June 22.
“On June 23, detectives recovered two GPMGs and eight AK-47 rifles used in the operation. All 26 suspects are currently in custody and have confessed to their roles in the killings. Legal procedures are complete, and their arraignment is imminent,” Egbetokun said.
The IGP stressed the police’s resolve to track down anyone involved in planning or executing attacks on Nigerian communities.
He also confirmed that 22 suspects were arrested in relation to the June 22 mob attack in Mangu, Plateau State, where passengers traveling from Zaria, Kaduna State, to a wedding were gruesomely murdered.
