A South African judge on Wednesday abruptly halted the burial of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, even as his funeral service was already underway, intensifying a heated dispute between Lungu’s family and the Zambian government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Lungu, who passed away on June 5 while undergoing medical treatment in South Africa, was a political rival of incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema. Hichilema had planned to lead a state funeral in Zambia for the late leader.

However, Lungu’s family resisted the repatriation of his remains, arguing he would not have wanted Hichilema present at his burial. In response, the Zambian government filed a legal challenge to prevent the burial from taking place in South Africa.

During the church service, with Lungu’s widow and mourners already gathered, a High Court judge in Gauteng issued a ruling confirming that, following an agreement between both parties, “the respondents undertake not to proceed with the funeral or burial of the late president.”

The court scheduled a full hearing on the matter for August 4. The decision was broadcast live by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), which also aired scenes from the memorial gathering.

“The delay only deepens the pain and sorrow being experienced by the family and the Zambian people,” said Zambian lawmaker Chanda Katotobwe, who was present at the ceremony, in an interview with SABC News.

Lungu, 68, led Zambia from 2015 to 2021. His party, the Patriotic Front, said he had been receiving specialised care at a clinic in Pretoria, though the exact cause of his death has not been disclosed.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
