Crisis Erupts in PDP! NWC Calls Emergency Meeting After INEC Rejects National Secretary Claim
Amid mounting internal tensions, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has convened an emergency meeting scheduled for today (Wednesday).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The urgent session comes on the heels of a stalled engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over leadership disputes and procedural discrepancies in the party’s communication.
A reliable source within the party confirmed the development to Punch, stating that the NWC called the meeting after INEC refused to acknowledge the PDP’s notice for its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, citing non-compliance with required protocols.
During a high-level interface on Tuesday involving PDP governors, NWC members, and INEC officials, the Commission’s Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, stressed the need for the party to resolve its internal contradictions, especially concerning the position of National Secretary.
“In the past few months, we’ve received letters from the party designating Udeh Okoye as Secretary. Then it was Samuel Anyanwu, later Setonji Koshoedo, and back again to Anyanwu,” Yakubu said.
“The most recent correspondence lacked the co-signature of the Secretary, which violates our procedural standards. For previous NEC meetings — all 99 of them — the communications were properly signed by both Chairman and Secretary.”
Yakubu reiterated INEC’s openness to engagement but insisted that the PDP must adhere to its constitution and the Electoral Act.
Speaking with journalists after the closed-door talks, Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, described the interaction as constructive, adding that the leadership would consult internally before making a formal pronouncement.
“We will meet with our broader stakeholders and share details of our discussion. A position will be announced thereafter,” he stated.
Earlier in his remarks, Damagum acknowledged that the controversy surrounding the National Secretary role — fuelled by litigation and conflicting court rulings — had complicated official communication with INEC.
“We’re here for a sincere off-camera engagement to help us gain clarity before returning to firm up our stance,” he said.
PDP Spokesman’s Comment Sparks Backlash
Meanwhile, the crisis took a fresh turn following remarks by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who claimed on Sunday that INEC had no authority to interfere in the party’s internal meeting procedures — a position now drawing internal criticism amid calls for caution and party unity.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
