The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Lagos Command Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society on Tuesday held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 300-unit housing project comprising one- and two-bedroom apartments in Igbehin Community, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro, hailed the initiative as a commendable step toward improving the welfare of personnel. He stressed the importance of ensuring that officers have access to housing, particularly in line with directives from the Commandant General (CG).

“It is unacceptable for an officer to retire without owning a home. That’s why the NSCDC cooperative took the initiative to make this housing scheme a reality,” Keshinro said. “The project includes 300 units of mini and two-bedroom flats, to be allocated based on expressed interest.”

Earlier, the President of the cooperative, Chief Superintendent of Corps (CSC) Kehinde Soetan, recalled that the CG, Dr. Ahmed Audi, had advised that every officer should be provided the opportunity to own a home.

Soetan noted that membership in the cooperative is aimed at enhancing welfare, adding that the housing scheme offers affordability and a flexible payment plan.

“This initiative is a golden opportunity for our members and the host community. The agreement with Youniverse includes 300 units to be constructed in phases,” he explained. “Today’s groundbreaking kicks off construction for 149 units, with the first 50 units expected to be commissioned by September 17.”

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
