The Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) commemorated the 2025 International Widows’ Day with a poignant yet empowering ceremony at the Ihejirika Military Auditorium in Jaji, Kaduna State. The event, held on Saturday, June 21, brought together members of the Military Widows Association (MIWA), Kaduna chapter, and was hosted by DEPOWA President, Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa.

Dedicated to honouring the strength, courage, and resilience of widows of fallen military personnel, the event served as a powerful reaffirmation of DEPOWA’s ongoing commitment to supporting widows through sustainable empowerment initiatives.

In a heartfelt opening address, Mrs. Musa paid tribute to the widows’ unwavering spirit in the face of profound loss.

“A widow is not just a woman who has lost her husband,” she said. “She is a symbol of strength, navigating the complexities of life with unmatched courage and dignity.”

Mrs. Musa emphasized that DEPOWA’s support for military widows extends far beyond symbolic gestures. She reaffirmed the Association’s pledge to offer tangible assistance — from vocational training programmes to educational scholarships for their children — aimed at fostering long-term empowerment and resilience.

Also in attendance were the National President of the Nigerian Air Force Officers Wives Association (NAFOWA), Arc. Dr. Rakiya Abubakar; the President of MIWA; and other dignitaries, resource persons, and community leaders who lent their voices in support of widow empowerment and community rebuilding.

The event featured interactive sessions, personal testimonials, the presentation of souvenirs, and moments of reflection captured in group photographs — all celebrating the enduring spirit of Nigeria’s military widows.

Mrs. Musa concluded with a message of encouragement, assuring the widows of their enduring place in the DEPOWA community.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.
