The Democratic Front (TDF) has praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to construct a new headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as a significant move to deepen Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
In a statement issued Monday in Abuja and jointly signed by TDF Chairman, Malam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group hailed the initiative as both visionary and courageous, saying it represents a strong commitment to entrenching democratic values.
“The new INEC complex sends a clear message that democracy in Nigeria is here to stay. President Tinubu’s bold step underscores his unwavering dedication to democratic progress,” the statement read.
TDF highlighted Tinubu’s personal history, noting that despite facing persecution under military regimes, he has remained committed to strengthening democratic institutions.
The group stressed that Nigeria’s democracy has long been undermined by fragile institutions and inconsistent adherence to democratic norms. It said Tinubu’s backing of INEC signals a move toward greater autonomy and efficiency for the electoral body.
The organisation also commended the president for honouring Nigeria’s democracy icons without including himself, describing the gesture as a mark of humility and statesmanship.
“Such self-effacing leadership inspires public trust and reinforces confidence in the electoral process,” TDF noted.
According to the group, INEC has benefited from prompt funding and increased technical support under Tinubu’s administration, resulting in smoother, more credible off-cycle elections in states like Imo, Edo, and Ondo.
“These elections were free from undue interference, reflecting INEC’s growing independence and laying a solid foundation for a credible 2027 general election,” the statement added.
TDF concluded by urging Nigerians to rally behind the president’s reform agenda, pointing to signs of democratic strengthening and economic recovery already taking shape.
