Presidency Refutes Lamido’s Claims, Reaffirms Tinubu’s Role in June 12 Struggle
The Presidency has strongly dismissed recent remarks made by former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, who falsely accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of supporting the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the Presidency described Lamido’s comments—made during a live television appearance—as a distortion of historical facts and a misguided attempt at historical revisionism.
Specifically, Lamido alleged that President Tinubu only gained prominence after the formation of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), and further claimed that Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, mobilised market women in support of the annulment. The Presidency categorically refuted these assertions, stating that they are entirely false.
“For the record, Alhaja Mogaji never mobilised market women to support the annulment. Had she done so, she would have lost her position as a respected market leader in Lagos,” the statement noted. “Although she once maintained a personal relationship with former President Ibrahim Babangida, this predated the June 12 crisis.”
The Presidency further turned the spotlight on Lamido’s own role in the events surrounding the annulment. As National Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP)—the party under which MKO Abiola won the 1993 election—Lamido, alongside then-SDP Chairman Tony Anenih, was accused of failing to resist the military’s injustice. “Rather than defending the people’s mandate, they capitulated and collaborated with the defeated National Republican Convention, effectively surrendering to the military,” the statement said.
In stark contrast, President Tinubu is credited with vocally and consistently opposing the annulment. On August 19, 1993, while serving as Senator for Lagos West, Tinubu condemned the annulment on the floor of the Senate, describing it as another coup against the Nigerian people. He demanded accountability and urged Nigerians to reject injustice and the abuse of power.
Following the coup by General Sani Abacha on November 17, 1993—which dissolved democratic institutions, including the National Assembly—Tinubu and a few other Senators reconvened in Lagos, defying the junta. He was arrested, detained at Alagbon, and charged in court on fabricated allegations. Despite the crackdown, Tinubu continued to fund and support pro-democracy protests, including the blockade of Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge.
As Abacha’s betrayal of the democratic cause became evident, Tinubu aligned closely with MKO Abiola and became a founding force behind NADECO, established on May 15, 1994. The coalition demanded Abacha’s exit and the restoration of Abiola’s mandate. Tinubu supported this struggle materially and financially, even as he fled into exile to escape persecution. His home in Victoria Island was later bombed by agents of the Abacha regime.
The statement also noted that Tinubu supported other democracy advocacy groups, including Professor Wole Soyinka’s NALICON, and provided financial resources to sustain journalists, activists, and NADECO leaders both at home and abroad.
“It is therefore disappointing that Alhaji Lamido, despite acknowledging Tinubu’s role in NADECO, would attempt to rewrite history for political gain,” the Presidency said.
The statement described Lamido’s remarks as part of a broader effort by a so-called “Coalition of the Disgruntled” to undermine Tinubu’s democratic credentials, and accused him of suffering from “tall poppy syndrome”—resentment toward those who rise above others.
In conclusion, the Presidency advised Lamido to verify his claims before making public statements, emphasizing that “revisionism serves neither truth nor national interest.”
“President Tinubu was—and remains—a committed democrat whose track record stands in sharp contrast to those who capitulated in the face of military oppression,” the statement added.
