The West Africa Economic Summit (WAES), now in its second and final day, is being held ahead of the 67th Ordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which takes place today at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
Conceived by President Bola Tinubu in his role as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, WAES marks a historic first for the region. The summit aims to strengthen regional economic ties with a strong emphasis on boosting trade and investment cooperation across West Africa.
Presidents from Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, The Gambia, Benin, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau have confirmed attendance at the summit, which is expected to produce tangible outcomes to accelerate regional integration—seen as essential for enduring peace, security, and prosperity in West Africa.
The event also gathers key ministers of finance, trade, infrastructure, and foreign affairs from ECOWAS member states, as well as officials from regional institutions such as the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA), West African Monetary Institute (WAMI), ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat.
Private sector executives, development partners, and policy analysts are also in attendance.
Demonstrating his commitment to regional inclusivity, President Tinubu extended invitations to the Alliance of Sahelian States and Mauritania. Ahead of the summit, a team of Special Envoys—led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and including Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and International Relations—delivered formal invitations to regional leaders.
