Political Storm Brews as PDP Vows to Hold Crucial NEC Meeting Despite INEC Objection
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its decision to go ahead with its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30, insisting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no legal authority to halt a statutory gathering of the party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba questioned the legitimacy of INEC Acting Secretary Halilu Aminu’s interference, accusing him of overstepping by attempting to define the purpose of an internal party meeting.
Once Nigeria’s dominant political force, the PDP has faced internal strife since its 2015 electoral defeat, grappling with leadership disputes, defections, and unresolved congress issues across several regions.
A major point of contention has been the tussle over the position of National Secretary between Sunday Udeh-Okoye and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who is reportedly backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. This leadership crisis has led to repeated postponements of the NEC meetings. To manage the situation, the party appointed Setonji Koshoedo as Acting National Secretary.
However, a fact-finding committee led by Taraba State Governor Kefas Agbu revealed that INEC continues to recognise Anyanwu as the substantive National Secretary.
Despite this, the PDP’s 99th NEC meeting fixed the 100th NEC session for June 30, and the party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, formally notified INEC on May 30.
INEC rejected the notice, stating that according to its regulations, notifications must be jointly signed by both the National Chairman and National Secretary, urging the party to comply accordingly.
In response, Ologunagba clarified that INEC’s statutory oversight does not extend to routine internal meetings such as NEC or National Working Committee (NWC) gatherings, unless party primaries or elections are involved.
“INEC has no legal or constitutional role in regulating regular NEC or NWC meetings,” he stated. “This has been repeatedly affirmed by the Supreme Court. INEC cannot cancel or dictate the terms of our meetings.”
He further accused INEC’s Acting Secretary of assigning a false narrative to the scheduled NEC gathering.
“We never indicated that the June 30 meeting was for electing officers or nominating candidates,” Ologunagba said. “Yet, INEC’s Acting Secretary presumed and assigned a purpose to our internal meeting, which is both misleading and overreaching.”
Ologunagba explained that the upcoming 100th NEC meeting will focus on evaluating progress toward the national convention, including reports from the Zoning Committee and Convention Planning Committee, which were constituted at the 99th NEC.
“At the last NEC meeting, it was unanimously agreed that the next session would hold on June 30. That decision still stands,” he concluded.

Betrayal Exposed? Faction Demands Police Probe Into Fraudulent Leadership Claims Sent To INEC!.

Key aspects of the petition include:
-
Allegations of False Representation: The petition challenges a November 3, 2025, letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which falsely claimed that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had replaced acting national chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum with Mohammed.
-
Contradictory NWC Records: Petitioners assert that the NWC’s November 1, 2025, emergency meeting actually resulted in the suspension of Anyanwu and three other officers due to alleged anti-party activities, and no record exists to support the claim that Damagum was suspended or Mohammed appointed.
-
Legal Precedents: The lawyers referenced an October 10, 2024, Federal High Court judgment that recognizes Damagum as the acting national chairman and prohibits INEC from accepting documents without his signature. Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.
-
Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.
-
Stated Objective: Counsel for the petitioner emphasized that the action is intended to address the integrity of public institutions and prevent the use of misleading internal party documentation, noting their readiness to provide supporting court judgments and party records to the police.
