The Benin Bronzes, once looted and auctioned across Europe, eventually found their way into collections such as the Wereldmuseum in Leiden, where they remained on display for over a century.

Their official return was marked by a ceremonial handover on Saturday at the National Museum in Onikan, Lagos.

During the event, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, described the repatriation as far more than the recovery of stolen artefacts—it symbolized the restoration of Nigeria’s cultural dignity and national pride.

Musawa highlighted the significance of the Benin Bronzes, describing them as masterpieces that reflect a glorious era of artistic and cultural achievement. She said the works captured the essence of a proud people, narrating their history, customs, and aspirations through exquisitely crafted bronze.

She stressed that the return of these treasures represents a broader story of healing and cultural renewal—one that reconnects Nigerians, especially future generations, with their heritage and identity.

“These bronzes are not just relics of the past; they are the living spirit and heartbeat of the Benin Kingdom,” Musawa stated. “Each artefact holds a fragment of our ancestral story, our shared humanity. Their return allows us to reclaim a narrative that, for too long, has been shaped by loss.”

Musawa further noted that the repatriation aligns with the UNESCO 1970 Convention, which opposes the illicit trade and retention of cultural property.

She urged the global community to support Nigeria’s efforts to recover its stolen heritage and called on other countries to emulate the Netherlands’ action.

The minister also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering backing of the repatriation process, and applauded the Dutch government for choosing to correct a historical wrong.

Also speaking at the event, Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Olugbile Holloway, hailed the handover as a shared victory. He emphasized that the achievement was not the result of any single entity, but rather a collaborative success driven by both national resolve and international cooperation.

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.
