Failure to Name the Enemy: How Political Evasion Fuels Plateau and Benue Carnage
On March 12, 2018, then-President Muhammadu Buhari visited Benue State to meet with the governor, key stakeholders, and grieving communities who had been repeatedly devastated by deadly attacks from rampaging herdsmen—losing loved ones, farmland, and ancestral homes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The presidential visit in March 2018 came roughly 10 weeks after the New Year’s Day massacre of 70 innocent farmers in Logo and Guma Local Government Areas, and just a week after the Omusu killings in Okpokwu LGA.
At the time, then-President Muhammadu Buhari expressed sympathy to the people of Benue, offering assurances that justice would prevail. Sadly, nearly seven years later, Benue remains engulfed in violence. Innocent lives are still being lost, and the cycle of government promises without action continues.
This pattern of unfulfilled assurances and the tendency to dismiss the killings as mere communal clashes provoked a strong response from Professor James Ayatse, the Tor Tiv and chairman of the Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers. He openly criticized the government’s failure to secure the lives and property of its citizens and denounced the persistent mischaracterisation of the attacks.
The royal father expressed dismay that Governor Hyacinth Alia, himself a Tiv man, echoed narratives that suggested the attackers were foreign elements or that the killings stemmed from local communal disputes—claims the Tor Tiv insisted were false and unverifiable by traditional channels.
Unlike in 2018, when he held back during Buhari’s visit, the Tor Tiv seized the opportunity of President Bola Tinubu’s visit on June 18, 2025, to speak plainly. This visit came in the wake of another bloody onslaught in Guma LGA—specifically in Yelewata and Daudu—where over 100 people were slaughtered on June 14, with the death toll reportedly nearing 200. The massacre drew widespread national outrage and again spotlighted Benue’s worsening security crisis.
Addressing both President Tinubu and Governor Alia directly, the Tor Tiv rejected the official narrative framing the violence as farmer-herder clashes. “Your Excellency, it is not herder-farmers clashes, it is not communal clashes, it is not reprisal attacks,” he declared. “This is a calculated, well-planned, full-scale genocidal invasion and land-grabbing campaign, and it has been happening for decades.”
He warned that misdiagnosing the crisis—treating war as a neighbourly dispute—has led to the wrong responses. With the facts now clearly stated, the Tor Tiv and his people hoped the government would finally take honest, decisive action to halt the bloodshed and protect the lives of Benue citizens.
