AI Must Lead Nigeria’s Technical Education or We’ll Be Left Behind — Rectors Sound Alarm”
The Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, and his counterpart from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Dr. Mukail Akinde, have emphasized the pressing need to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Nigeria’s technical education system to equip students with future-proof skills and drive national development.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at a public lecture themed “Technical Education and National Development: The Place of AI, Its Credibility, Trust, and Transparency” at the Yusuf Grillo Auditorium in Lagos, the rectors highlighted the transformative potential of AI and stressed the importance of deploying it ethically within academic institutions.
According to a statement from YabaTech on Sunday, the event was held in honour of Dr. Omobayo Taofeek Raheem — former Deputy Rector and past Director of the Centre for Information, Communication and Public Relations — in recognition of his outstanding service to the college.
In his welcome address, Dr. Abdul described the lecture as a timely platform for rethinking the future of technical education in a rapidly advancing technological landscape.
“The future of education — especially technical education — is inseparable from technology, and more specifically, artificial intelligence,” Abdul said.
He noted that AI, when strategically deployed, can foster innovation, strengthen applied research, and better prepare students for the demands of a dynamic global workforce.
“This lecture goes beyond celebrating an individual. It challenges us to embrace AI to reshape technical education and bridge existing skills gaps,” he added.
Delivering the chairman’s remarks, Dr. Akinde echoed the call for innovation, noting that technical education must evolve beyond outdated methods to adopt smart learning tools and digital systems.
“AI stands as one of the most groundbreaking tools in contemporary development. Its application in technical education improves the quality of training and readies students for vital roles in automation, robotics, and data analytics,” he said.
Akinde, however, cautioned that AI implementation must be governed by ethical standards to avoid misuse and algorithmic bias. He urged collaboration among educators, tech developers, and policymakers to ensure AI tools are transparent and accountable.
Citing examples such as intelligent tutoring platforms, virtual laboratories, automated assessments, and AI-driven code assistants, he explained how these tools can personalise education and improve student performance.
He further advocated for incorporating AI ethics into academic curricula, training students not only in tech proficiency but also in responsible and values-driven innovation.
The discourse underlined a shared concern: Nigeria must keep pace with global trends by leveraging AI to create inclusive, innovative, and skill-based learning environments that reflect the realities of today’s economy.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
