‘This Is Wickedness!’ – Dangote, Aiteo Blamed for Surging Pump Prices
There is growing public outcry as top producers—Dangote, Aiteo, Ever, and Fynefield—have reportedly hiked the ex-depot price of petrol, sparking fears of a fresh surge in pump prices nationwide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, has witnessed a sharp upward adjustment, sparking widespread concern among Nigerians.
According to data published on Friday by petroleumprice.ng—a platform that tracks daily petroleum product pricing—Dangote Petroleum Refinery raised its price to ₦880 per litre, up from the previous ₦825, marking a ₦55 increase. Other marketers followed suit: Aiteo now charges ₦893, Ever ₦920, and Fynefield ₦928 per litre.
The price hike has triggered fears of an imminent surge in pump prices, with some filling stations already selling between ₦935 and ₦955 per litre, compared to the previous average of ₦900.
Reacting, motorist Michael Uduegbunam expressed deep concern:
“This is very troubling. Pump prices are already creeping toward ₦950. With this increase, transport fares will rise, and so will the cost of goods and services. Fuel is central to daily life in Nigeria—commuting, running businesses, even powering homes.”
Civil servant Istifanus Ishaku warned that the development could worsen economic hardship:
“People are already struggling. Now, they’ll have to cut back on essential spending just to keep up. It’s frustrating and breeds uncertainty.”
Surprisingly, the price spike comes amid a global decline in crude oil prices. On Friday, Brent fell by 3.02% to $76.47, WTI dropped to $74.93, and Murban traded at $76.97. Yet, Nigerian consumers see no relief due to fears of supply instability and foreign exchange fluctuations.
Aliko Dangote, president of the Dangote Group, recently admitted that his 650,000-barrels-per-day refinery has increasingly turned to U.S. crude imports due to ongoing domestic supply shortages. From April to July 2025, the refinery is expected to import about 17.65 million barrels, with 3.65 million barrels already delivered in recent months under the Federal Government’s naira-for-crude policy.
On Monday, Festus Osifo, president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), criticised marketers for taking advantage of Nigerians, arguing that petrol should cost between ₦700 and ₦750 per litre based on current international crude prices.
“Crude is hovering around $60 per barrel. Going by global metrics, petrol shouldn’t be selling above ₦750. If Nigerians suffer when crude prices rise, they deserve relief when it drops,” Osifo said.
Depot operators and marketers are reportedly adjusting to new realities, with Dangote’s move expected to trigger a wave of price revisions. Sources say some depots had delayed releasing product since Tuesday when Dangote paused sales, leading to speculative hikes and a ripple effect across other suppliers.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
