New Threat to APC? Atiku, El-Rufai Coalition Sparks Panic in Presidency
The Federal Government has responded to moves by a coalition of opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, to register a new political party in preparation for the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Operating under the banner of the Nigeria National Coalition Group (NNCG), a group of prominent opposition figures has officially submitted an application to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register a new political party—the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).
This move signals a strategic shift from earlier efforts by the coalition to align with established parties such as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The decision to chart an independent course was reached during a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, with INEC confirming receipt of the application the following day.
The proposed ADA has appointed Chief Akin Anderson Rickets, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority during Nasir El-Rufai’s tenure as Minister of Transportation, as its interim national chairman. Abdullahi Musa Elayo, a former House of Representatives member from Nasarawa State, will serve as interim national secretary.
In a formal letter to INEC, Rickets wrote:
“We respectfully submit this request for the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), as a political party, following the decision of the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor this application.”
The application outlines key identifiers of the party: the acronym ADA, the slogan “Justice for All”, and a party logo that features symbolic elements such as the corn (maize) and distinctive colours. The party also included its manifesto, constitution, and other supporting documents detailing its ideological foundation, structure, and adherence to constitutional and electoral guidelines—including Sections 40 and 222 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 75 of the 2022 Electoral Act.
Rickets added:
“We have attached the party flag, manifesto, constitution, and minutes of meeting, and await INEC’s response as we proceed with the registration process.”
Several high-profile politicians are said to be involved in the formation of ADA. These include Peter Obi, Aminu Tambuwal, John Oyegun, Rauf Aregbesola, Abubakar Malami, Babachir Lawal, Uche Secondus, Osita Chidoka, and Nnenna Ukeje. The coalition’s stated aim is to unite opposition forces and present a “credible alternative” to the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.
However, the initiative has drawn criticism from the Federal Government. Reacting to the development, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, dismissed the significance of the effort, accusing the group of inflating its political relevance.
“This is merely a basic party registration application. There’s no genuine coalition here,” Keyamo posted on X.
“The whole thing is just hype. It’s a psychological stunt aimed at creating artificial public momentum. No major political party is backing this. If they think they’re replicating what the APC achieved in 2013, this is a poor imitation—an outright mockery of a real political coalition.”
He further argued that a few individuals exercising their constitutional right to form a party doesn’t constitute a merger or credible coalition:
“We see associations like this spring up every day. When the dust settles, it’s just another small group trying to register a party. After all the noise, it ends up being a disappointing anti-climax.”
