Nothing in the air suggested dissent as a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters gathered in Gombe on Sunday, June 15, 2025. They appeared united in their loyalty to the ruling party’s top figures—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. But just moments into what was meant to be a crucial stakeholder meeting, tensions erupted unexpectedly, igniting a political firestorm that threatened to destabilize the event and shake the very foundation of the party.

The disruption, sudden and jarring, shattered the celebratory atmosphere. Party leaders and loyalists alike were thrown into confusion, caught off guard by a conflict they never saw coming. At the heart of the turmoil was one man—Kashim Shettima. Despite his unwavering commitment to the Tinubu administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda, resentment had been quietly building within his own political base.

For two years, Tinubu and Shettima have pushed forward their joint mandate, winning praise from supporters and even attracting opposition figures now eager to defect to the APC. Their momentum appeared unstoppable. Yet beneath the surface, a faction of influential APC stakeholders from the Northeast harbored deep-seated grievances against the Vice President.

While Shettima remained unaware of their growing discontent, it surfaced dramatically at the Gombe meeting. The very individuals who should have championed his cause instead betrayed him, using the occasion to send a loud and clear message—they no longer had confidence in him and were quietly rallying to see him replaced ahead of 2027.

What was meant to be a show of unity and support for the Tinubu-Shettima 2027 presidential bid turned chaotic as internal cracks within the All Progressives Congress (APC) Northeast zone flared into a dramatic confrontation during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

Party faithful and leaders had gathered in large numbers to affirm their backing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections. The atmosphere was festive and full of enthusiasm—until a storm broke out midway into the meeting.

The event, held at the Gombe State International Conference Centre, was suddenly disrupted by a fierce outburst of anger and violence triggered by the perceived sidelining of Vice President Shettima. While speeches by Governors Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Babagana Zulum (Borno), and host Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe) reaffirmed support for the Tinubu-Shettima ticket, tension erupted when the APC National Vice Chairman (North East), Mustapha Salihu, conspicuously omitted Shettima’s name while endorsing Tinubu for a second term.

The omission sparked outrage among loyalists, particularly from Borno—Shettima’s home state—who interpreted it as a deliberate slight. Despite Salihu’s attempts to explain, furious supporters drowned him out with chants of “Shettima! Shettima!!”, before physically attacking him. Chairs, stones, and other objects were hurled as chaos erupted. Security personnel swiftly intervened, whisking Salihu away to safety to prevent a lynching.

The drama played out in full view of top APC leaders, including the three governors and National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who, in a further misstep, also failed to mention Shettima during his closing remarks—fueling the fury even more.

Police were eventually forced to deploy teargas to control the situation, as panic spread and attendees scrambled to escape the hall.

Behind the scenes, political undercurrents are believed to be driving efforts to remove Shettima from the 2027 ticket. Sources point to a faction of powerful Borno politicians—former governors and key influencers—who feel alienated by Shettima’s rise. Once his political allies, they now reportedly accuse him of neglect and disrespect. These figures, who maintain strong connections within the presidency, are allegedly lobbying for his replacement with their own preferred candidate.

Critics of Shettima within the region argue that the North East underperformed for the APC in the 2023 elections and therefore does not deserve to retain the vice-presidency. However, his supporters strongly disagree, insisting that Shettima’s loyalty, performance, and role in sustaining the “Renewed Hope Agenda” earn him a rightful place on the 2027 joint ticket.

The outburst in Gombe, while shocking, is seen as a culmination of months of brewing discontent. The incident, observers say, could fracture party unity in the region if not urgently addressed—particularly as opposition groups intensify efforts to challenge the APC in the next election.

“I Was Misled!” – Nafiu Bala Claims He Was Deceived Into ADC Handover Event.

Published

A new dimension has been added to the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as factional figure Nafiu Bala has accused former party national chairman Ralph Nwosu of allegedly deceiving him into attending a major party gathering.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in an interview on AIT on Monday, Bala said he was invited under the impression that the meeting was a routine event meant to welcome new entrants into the party. However, he claimed he later discovered that the gathering was actually organised to unveil a new leadership structure reportedly headed by David Mark.

He explained that the true nature of the event only became clear after proceedings had already commenced, adding that it coincided with the resignation of Nwosu and the announcement of a new set of party executives.

According to Bala, the development represented a significant turning point in the internal crisis within the ADC, noting that the emergence of a leadership bloc associated with David Mark and other figures deepened existing divisions in the party.

Bala alleged that he was initially told the event was a simple adoption of new members, but later realized it was a formal handover involving the new coalition leadership. He also said that on the same day, Nwosu announced his resignation while unveiling new party officials, including names such as David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola.

He added that the situation further escalated tensions within the party, as different factions continued to contest control of the ADC structure.

Following the event, Bala said he moved to address the developments through internal party channels, including convening consultations and a National Executive Council meeting about a week later.

He further stated that after the consultations, he notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of his position as deputy national chairman and declared himself acting national chairman of the party.

Bala also alleged that the crisis worsened after he discovered what he described as irregularities, including claims that his signature was forged on documents linked to the resignation of some party officials. He said the disputed documents were used to facilitate the emergence of a new leadership team.

He concluded by saying he had taken legal steps against the faction aligned with David Mark and also made his position public through media channels.
