The retirement ceremony took place at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) in Oshodi, Lagos, and featured 362 retirees from the Nigerian Army, 134 from the Navy, and 46 from the Air Force.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the Commander of TRADOC, Major General Aligbe Obhiozele, praised the outgoing personnel for their unwavering commitment and discipline throughout their military careers.
“Today, we honour your courage, discipline, and selfless devotion to Nigeria,” Obhiozele said. “Your 35-year journey reflects the highest ideals of patriotism and resilience. As you transition into civilian life, we urge you to carry these values into your communities.”
He also cautioned the retirees to be mindful of their health and finances, noting that society would continue to look up to them as role models of integrity and discipline.
NAFRC Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Bashir Mamman, highlighted the center’s legacy of impact, revealing that it had trained over 53,000 service members since inception. He extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for supporting recent upgrades at the facility—including improved starter packs, digital record systems, enhanced e-learning, and modernized vocational workshops.
“These reforms have greatly strengthened our ability to equip retirees with the skills needed for a successful transition to civilian life,” Mamman said.
The retirees, trained in a variety of trades, were awarded discharge certificates amid cheers from their loved ones. Many described the occasion as emotional yet uplifting.
“I feel well-prepared for what lies ahead,” said Sergeant Musa Bello, who received agricultural training. “I plan to invest my gratuity in farming. I’m proud of the service I gave to this country.”
The ceremony concluded with the traditional lowering of the flags, symbolizing the formal end of their military careers.
