The Federal Government has donated 1,000 life jackets to be distributed across riverine communities in Patigi, Edu, Baruten, Kaiama, and Moro Local Government Areas of Kwara State.

Presenting the items in Ilorin on Friday, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by the Director of Maritime Services, Dr. Mercy Ilori, announced that an additional 2,500 life jackets would be delivered soon.

Oyetola described the initiative as a deliberate effort to enhance safety and reliability in water transportation nationwide, especially in rural and riverine areas.

He noted that boat accidents—many of which are avoidable—continue to claim lives due to poor safety practices, particularly the failure to wear life jackets.

“This initiative is part of the Ministry’s threefold strategy to ensure safer inland water travel: rigorous enforcement of the Inland Waterways Transportation Regulations 2023, sustained public sensitisation on safety, and distribution of essential safety gear like life jackets,” Oyetola said.

He emphasized that wearing a life jacket is not optional, urging boat and ferry operators to make safety a top priority.

Representing the state governor, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Mamman Jibril, appealed to residents and transporters in the benefiting communities to use the jackets consistently, rather than storing them away.

“These life jackets are meant to be worn, not kept at home. Their proper use will not only save lives but also encourage continued support from the ministry,” he said.

“Life jackets aren’t just accessories; they are essential life-saving tools that can mean the difference between survival and tragedy,” he added.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
