The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 44-year-old Wasiu Akinwande, alias Olori Eso, described as the most notorious hired assassin in Lagos in recent years. He was captured during a precision tactical operation codenamed ‘Silence, Speed and Surprise’ by the Command’s Tactical Squad at his hideout in Agbado, Ogun State.
In a statement on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that Akinwande—who had long terrorised Mushin and its environs—was tracked to Ogun after several failed attempts to apprehend him.
The statement highlighted the breakthrough:
“The arrest of the most vicious and wanted hired killer and gang leader in Lagos, Wasiu Akinwande, aka Olori Eso, led to the recovery of nine high-powered firearms, various rounds of ammunition, magazines, a dagger, walkie-talkies, and multiple international passports.”
Akinwande is alleged to have led multiple deadly gangs involved in more than a decade of violent crimes including murder, armed robbery, cult-related killings, and kidnapping.
Describing him as “the most wanted serial killer in Lagos in recent memory,” Hundeyin said his arrest is a major milestone in efforts to secure communities in Mushin and surrounding areas.
Items recovered from Akinwande’s residence include:
-
Two AK-47 rifles
-
One K2 assault rifle
-
One Red Ryder rifle
-
Three pump-action shotguns
-
Two locally-made pistols
-
Five magazines
-
57 live cartridges
-
70 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition
-
27 rounds of 9mm ammunition
-
One used 5.56mm round
-
One dagger
-
Three walkie-talkies
-
Nine international passports belonging to various individuals
According to Hundeyin, Akinwande confessed to using the weapons for a string of targeted killings carried out with his gang.
The Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has ordered a deeper investigation led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to identify and apprehend other members of the gang.
Four families have already come forward to identify Akinwande as the person responsible for the killings of their loved ones, the police added.
