President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has bestowed the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on retired Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, acknowledging his fearless defense of democratic ideals during Nigeria’s military rule and his sustained contributions to the nation’s democratic development.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The announcement was made during Tinubu’s one-day working visit to Kaduna State on Thursday, where he also unveiled 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and commissioned several infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing public transportation and development in the state.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu admitted that Col. Umar had been unintentionally left out of the list of honourees during his June 12 Democracy Day address at the National Assembly.

“Let me use this opportunity to correct an omission. One of those I missed during my June 12 broadcast is Colonel Dangiwa. Today, I’m pleased to bestow on him the CFR honour,” Tinubu declared.

Col. Umar, who once served as the military governor of Kaduna State, became widely respected for his open condemnation of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Despite being a serving officer, he bravely advocated for the validation of Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s mandate and the return to civilian rule.

After resigning from the military, Umar dedicated himself to civic engagement and later founded the Movement for Unity and Progress political party.

President Tinubu said the conferment of the honour represents a national acknowledgement of those who stood firmly for democracy during Nigeria’s turbulent times.

During his visit to Kaduna State on Thursday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu conferred the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on retired Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, in recognition of his unwavering stance in defence of democracy during Nigeria’s years of military rule and his lasting impact on the nation’s democratic evolution.

The honour was announced as Tinubu commissioned a number of development projects, including the rollout of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses aimed at enhancing Kaduna’s transportation system.

In his address, Tinubu acknowledged that Col. Umar had been unintentionally omitted from his list of Democracy Day honourees during his speech at the National Assembly on June 12.

“Let me use this moment to correct an oversight. Colonel Dangiwa was among those I missed in the Democracy Day broadcast. I am proud to officially honour him today with the CFR award,” the President stated.

Col. Umar, a former military administrator of Kaduna State, drew national attention for challenging the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election—an election deemed the freest in Nigeria’s history. His efforts to see Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s victory upheld made him a notable figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

Following his resignation from military service in 1993, he transitioned into political advocacy and founded the Movement for Unity and Progress.

President Tinubu noted that the award signifies the country’s collective appreciation for the sacrifices of those who fought to preserve Nigeria’s democratic aspirations during its darkest moments

Bwala spoke during an interview on Arise Television, where he addressed questions about the video and the current performance of the power sector under the Tinubu administration.

He said the president’s statement should be viewed within the context of his ongoing first term, stressing that it is too early to judge promises tied to a possible second term.

According to him, the administration has already begun implementing reforms in the power sector, including policy decisions and new legislative measures aimed at improving electricity supply.

He maintained that progress is ongoing and that the focus should be on what has been achieved so far rather than expectations for future electoral outcomes.

Bwala added that Nigerians will ultimately decide at the appropriate time whether the president deserves another term based on his overall performance.

“The president has not even come to the point of second term. We are still in the first term, and reforms are ongoing, including new laws and sectoral changes,” he said.

He further argued that the electorate will make their judgment when the time comes, based on the results delivered by the administration.
