From Chaos to Champions: 90 Niger Delta Youths Trained as Peace Ambassadors by PIND

The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) has empowered 90 young individuals with training in conflict prevention, early warning mechanisms, and grassroots peacebuilding strategies.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The 2025 Niger Delta Peace Champions Workshop, a two-day event held in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, brought together youth representatives from across the region to equip them with vital skills for promoting peace and stability.

During the workshop, Effiong Essien, Acting Executive Director of PIND, described young people as vital agents of peace, emphasizing the significant impact of youth-led peacebuilding initiatives. He praised Akwa Ibom for being a shining example of peaceful coexistence and community-driven progress.

“This workshop reflects PIND’s unwavering dedication to advancing youth-led, data-informed, and community-focused peacebuilding efforts in the Niger Delta,” Essien said. “By investing in human capital and encouraging inter-community collaboration, the initiative enhances local resilience to conflict and fosters both economic and social development.”

David Udofia, PIND’s Peacebuilding Programme Manager, highlighted that the participants — now recognized as peace champions — are prepared to return to their communities as change-makers.
“Peacebuilding starts with preparation, vision, and unity. These champions are going back with more than just knowledge — they carry a renewed determination to transform their surroundings,” he said.

The peace champions, aged between 18 and 35 and selected from the nine Niger Delta states, received training on PIND’s SMS-based Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) system — a real-time conflict monitoring and grassroots intervention tool.

They also participated in sessions on mindset reorientation, conflict analysis and resolution, leadership, volunteerism, and entrepreneurship.

Facilitators included Nwamara Amadikwa, CEO of Amy6015 Global Enterprise, alongside PIND peacebuilding specialists Afeno Odomovo, Chukwudi Njoku, and Abiodun Akanbi.

In a statement shared on his verified Facebook page, Mutfwang said discussions focused on security, welfare, and the overall development of Plateau people, with special attention on the recent attacks in rural communities.

According to sources, participants reviewed the security situation and expressed deep concern over continued loss of lives and destruction of property.

They also resolved to develop stronger frameworks to address the root causes of the violence, anchored on values of discipline, courage, and patriotism.

News reports that the incident, which occurred on April 9, 2026, claimed the lives of the senior officer and several other soldiers.

A family source told Vanguard that the General was speaking with his identical twin brother, who resides in the United Kingdom, at the time of the attack.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
