APC Flags Off LG Poll Campaign, Sanwo-Olu Rallies Support for 433 Candidates

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) officially launched its campaign for the upcoming local government elections on Tuesday, presenting party flags to 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship candidates at a ceremony held at the APC Secretariat in Ogba.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, assured the candidates of the administration’s full backing, stressing the symbolic importance of the flag presentation.

“My commitment to this party is unwavering. Today’s flag-off is more than a formality—it marks the start of hard work and dedication. We are united behind every candidate and confident in their success by God’s grace,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He urged the candidates to uphold the party’s progressive values and deliver on their promises to improve lives and advance the vision of President Bola Tinubu.

The Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, encouraged candidates to prioritize public service over personal gain and urged aggrieved party members to remain patient, noting that more opportunities would arise in the future.

“We must love our communities above all else. Those who didn’t secure tickets should hold on; their time will come,” Olusi said, also advising youths to mobilize support by canvassing across neighborhoods.

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, emphasized party unity, stating, “The party’s decisions are final. We must support our candidates wholeheartedly and avoid internal conflict. This election is also a litmus test for our strength ahead of 2027.”

APC State Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, praised party stakeholders for maintaining peace throughout the primaries. He revealed that only 57 out of 475 chairmanship aspirants were selected, and urged candidates to focus on key development areas such as education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and infrastructure.

“This is a real election. We must go door-to-door and rally support. The performance of our elected officials will be closely monitored,” Ojelabi warned.

Campaign Committee Chairman, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, expressed confidence in victory but called for intense grassroots mobilisation. He urged Local Organising Committees (LOCs) to intensify ward-level campaigns without exceeding the June 9 deadline stipulated in the election guidelines.

Balogun added that each LOC should be co-chaired by the local APC and council chairmen and should actively collaborate with ethnic and community groups to boost support.

Meanwhile, Youth Party candidate for Eti-Osa LGA, Ayodele Adio, accused the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) of deliberately compromising the electoral process by issuing a misleading polling guide just three weeks before the election.

He argued that the polling guide should have been released much earlier and criticized the one-week deadline for submitting party agents’ names, citing sudden changes in polling units.

Adio further accused LASIEC of exceeding its mandate by attempting to delineate and allocate polling units—an authority reserved solely for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He also cited lack of transparency in the naming and location of polling stations.

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
