Senate Sparks Uproar Over Ibas’ Controversial Appointment of Non-Indigene as Rivers Electoral Boss
The Senate has raised concerns over the appointment of Michael Ekpai Odey, a Cross River State native, as Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), describing the move by the state’s Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, as questionable.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This concern was voiced during a screening session held Tuesday by the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Emergency Rule in Rivers, chaired by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. While reviewing President Bola Tinubu’s RSIEC nominees, Bamidele vowed that the committee would thoroughly investigate the legality and implications of appointing a non-indigene to head another state’s electoral body, questioning whether the action could stand as a lawful precedent.
The Senate had earlier received a list of seven nominees from President Tinubu — including Odey as RSIEC Chairman — through a formal letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The list was referred to the Bamidele-led committee for further legislative work within two weeks.
“We are aware of the legal provisions,” Bamidele said. “While there may be no clear prohibition against appointing an outsider, it’s important to assess whether this decision aligns with the spirit of the law and public sentiment. This isn’t a matter we’ll gloss over. We need to be sure this is something defensible — both legally and ethically.”
