Shocking Revelation: Benue Governor Says Herdsmen Came From Outside Nigeria, Notifies Security Forces
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has confirmed that 59 people were killed in the recent deadly attack on Yelewata, a border town between Benue and Nasarawa states, allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking to journalists at the Government House on Sunday, Governor Alia said the death toll was verified through a joint headcount by security operatives and the families of the victims. Among the deceased were members of the Nigerian military and civil defence, who died defending the community during the assault.
Governor Alia revealed that the attackers entered Benue from Nasarawa State. He commended Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule for his support, noting that Sule shared critical intelligence about the invasion. Alia also confirmed that one woman was killed on the Nasarawa side during the incident.
The governor made these disclosures while receiving a report from the panel of inquiry on militia activities in the Sankera axis. He assured that the findings would be forwarded to relevant authorities, and investigations would follow on all individuals named, as part of broader efforts to restore lasting peace in the region.
Pope Leo XIV Condemns Massacre, Offers Prayers for Benue
Pope Leo XIV has condemned the attack, describing it as a “terrible massacre”. Addressing the faithful during the Sunday Angelus prayer at the Vatican, the Pope said many of the victims were displaced civilians, brutally murdered in what he called an act of “extreme cruelty.”
He expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis and prayed for the return of “justice, peace, and protection” in affected communities.
“We pray especially for the rural Christian communities of Benue, who have long suffered under the weight of relentless violence,” he said.
Protests Erupt in Makurdi over Killings
In a related development, outraged youths staged a protest in Makurdi on Sunday, demanding immediate government action over the massacre. The demonstrators gathered at the Wurukum food basket roundabout as early as 8 a.m., blocking traffic and chanting slogans.
They were later joined by popular social media activist and influencer, Martin Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, who has been outspoken about security and human rights issues across Nigeria.
