Speaking during an interview on The Morning Brief on Channels Television on Monday, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia revealed that President Bola Tinubu recently met with him and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, to discuss peaceful resolutions to the ongoing violence in the state.
According to Alia, the President called the meeting in response to public concerns and to ensure unity among key stakeholders in addressing the crisis.
“President Tinubu was right to urge us to find common ground for peace,” Alia said. “He invited the SGF and me after hearing various reports. He wanted to be sure there were no issues between us.”
Alia clarified that there is no conflict between him and Akume, a former Benue governor. “The SGF himself confirmed that there are no differences between us. And if there ever were, going forward, there won’t be any. Our traditional rulers can now rest easy,” he assured.
The governor blamed external actors for escalating the violence, stating, “The crisis is being orchestrated from outside. While we can manage local government matters internally, the real threat comes from outsiders invading with AK-47 and AK-49 rifles.”
Alia also refuted claims of neglect by the Federal Government. “If President Tinubu didn’t grasp the gravity of the situation, he wouldn’t be offering full support,” he said.
He highlighted progress in restoring security, noting, “At one point, 17 out of 23 local governments were under siege. We’ve brought that down to nine, then six, and now just three—thanks to the Federal Government’s backing.”
