Selective Recognition! Tinubu’s Democracy Honours Spark Outrage from Agbakoba”

Tinubu, during his Democracy Day address at a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, paid tribute to various activists, journalists, and intellectuals who boldly resisted military rule.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Agbakoba—himself a key figure in the June 12 movement—welcomed the gesture but noted that the list of honorees was incomplete.
“I commend the President for what he has done, but I must point out that the list isn’t exhaustive. Baba Omojola and Femi Ojodu, who were my fellow inmates during our imprisonment, deserve to be included. Clement Nwankwo, who co-founded the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) with me, should also be on that list,” he said.
Agbakoba expressed hope that the government would acknowledge this oversight and expand the list in future.
He further acknowledged Nigeria’s 26 years of unbroken civilian governance as a positive achievement but stressed that the nation still has a long way to go in building a robust multi-party democracy.
According to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the prevailing political culture—where most politicians gravitate toward the ruling party—undermines the essence of a true democratic system.
He said, “Completing 26 years of uninterrupted democracy is something to celebrate. I prefer to see the glass as half full and remain optimistic. We’ve come far from military rule, but our democracy is still evolving and requires consolidation.
“As even the President noted in his National Assembly address, we lack a solid multi-party system. Presently, we have a de facto one-party structure where everyone wants to align with the dominant party—be it APC, PDP, or APGA. The ideological differences between parties are almost nonexistent. We must work toward a system with a well-defined ruling party and a vibrant, credible opposition.”
